Wild Caught Pickerel
Looking for something different to put on the barbeque this summer? Try out one of our latest seafood additions – fresh water pickerel! Most commonly fished in Lake Erie, pickerel are a wild-caught species from Ontario. This super unique product is sweet and mild and is great for people who are looking for a fish that doesn’t taste “fishy”. Lake Erie is the shallowest of the Great Lakes and the warmer water makes the fish grow exceptionally fast. This means there is always a healthy stock of fresh pickerel available and the population is very stable. Pickerel is both Ocean Wise and MSC approved for being a sustainable and responsibly caught fish. You can feel great about what you’re eating when you add pickerel to your next box!
COOKING TIP: Raw pickerel fillets have a sandy-brown colour and a thin, colourful skin on one side. When cooked, the meat turns firm with off-white colour. Pickerel is incredibly versatile and can be enjoyed a number of ways including baked, pan-fried or deep-fried with a crispy breading. Guess what? It’s also firm enough to put onto the barbeque and enjoy with your other truLOCAL favourites!
Note: This lake fish may contain small bones.
