Free-Range vs. Free-Run: What’s the difference?

Ever wonder what all of those buzzwords on chicken labels mean? You are certainly not alone. With so many marketing buzzwords out there it is easy for even the savviest of consumers to get confused. Fortunately, the difference between free-run and free-range is not that complicated, and once you know the difference you can make an informed decision for yourself and your family.

Free-run chickens are those that are able to run free in an open concept barn that has a variety of nests and perches. These birds are not housed in cages and therefore have the freedom to roam the barn floor at their leisure, while some barns may be equipped with multi-tiered aviaries.

Free-range chickens are raised in a similar type of barn environment as free-run chickens, however they also have access to the outdoors. Whether permitting, these chickens are able to go to pasture to roam free. (Note that outdoor access is only available seasonally in Canada.) However, free-range is not a legally defined term in Canada so exact access to pasture can vary from farm to farm.
