Osteoporosis is a disease that results in brittle, fragile bones that are susceptible to breaks and fractures, especially in older populations. Coming from Greek “osteon”, meaning bone, and “poro”, meaning porous, osteoporosis quite literally refers to porous bones. Your bones are a living tissue made mostly of collagen, which consist of a harder outer layer thanks to calcium, with a softer internal component. This makes your skeleton strong enough to support your body through your day-to-day activities, while also leaving your bones flexible and supple enough to with stand the impact of everything from walking, bumping into something, or even taking a fall.
Osteoporosis is a disease that can sneak up on you – there’s often no sign of it until you experience a broken bone. It’s important to intake adequate macro- and micro-nutrients, to maintain bone density, and to mitigate the risk of osteoporosis-related complications. One of the best ways to protect your bones is through exercise. Building muscle helps to pad your bones – and working on strength, balance, and posture can slow the rate of bone loss.
Protein is a key component to building muscle. You don’t need to be lifting heavy weights in the gym twice a day to require sufficient protein in your diet. Whether you’re doing aerobic exercise, working on balance, or doing bodyweight workouts at home, choosing high-quality protein sources will make it easier to build that much-needed muscle – and will make sure that you stay full, and aren’t left feeling depleted by your workout.
Whether you’re currently living with osteoporosis, or are focused on preventing it, the meats you eat matter. Options like grass-fed bone broth are packed with micronutrients that are great for your bones (and your gut!), and lean proteins like ground turkey or boneless chicken breast help to repair muscle fibers that are broken down during exercise.
Ample activity is important for all Canadians, and delicious, local protein plays a significant role. Pair that with the peace of mind that comes with knowing where your meat products come from, and convenient home delivery and just like Osteoporosis Canada and truLOCAL, it’s a match made in heaven.
