Sustaining The Earth Even Beyond Earth Day

truLOCAL's sustainability practices: local sourcing, responsible farming, and food waste reduction.

In a world where sustainability is no longer just a buzzword but a crucial necessity, companies prioritizing environmental consciousness are becoming more attractive to potential customers. Companies often take advantage of this during events like Earth Day when they tote how much they are doing and then ditch their ideals the next day. From an environmental sustainability awareness standpoint, any exposure helps to move the conversation (albeit slowly) towards the greater good but reducing environmental impact should not just be for one day. It should be an everyday business practice.

If you are looking for a blog post that brags about all the ways that our company is perfect, this is not that blog and we are not that company. This blog will cover a few of the ways that we are trying to make a difference but at the end of the day, there is always so much more that can be done by any company and any individual. We need to all do more. If that makes you worried that this will be an environmental extremist blog post that shames everyone to do more, it is definitely not that either. But as Earth Day 2024 fades into a memory, it makes us question if truLOCAL does enough and if we can do more in the future.

At the heart of truLOCAL's environmental ethos lies our dedication to sourcing locally. By supporting local farmers and producers, truLOCAL reduces the carbon footprint associated with transportation. This localized approach means fewer emissions from long-haul transportation which lowers our environmental impact while still competing in the food industry.

truLOCAL's focus on local sourcing fosters a deeper connection between consumers and their food sources. By knowing exactly where their meat comes from and how it's produced, truLOCAL customers can make more informed choices that align with their values. This transparency not only promotes environmental sustainability but also encourages a more conscientious approach to consumption.

But truLOCAL's commitment to sustainability extends beyond just sourcing practices. The company takes great strides to ensure that its operations are as environmentally friendly as possible. From utilizing recyclable packaging materials to implementing energy-efficient practices in their facilities, truLOCAL actively seeks ways to minimize its ecological footprint at every turn.

One of the most significant contributions truLOCAL makes to environmental sustainability is through its support of responsible farming practices. By partnering with farmers who prioritize animal welfare, ethical treatment, and sustainable farming methods, truLOCAL ensures that its products are not only of the highest quality but also produced with the utmost respect for the environment.

Responsible farming practices, such as rotational grazing and regenerative agriculture, have a profound positive impact on the environment. These methods promote soil health, biodiversity, and carbon sequestration, effectively mitigating climate change and preserving natural ecosystems. By supporting farmers who employ these practices, truLOCAL is not only delivering superior products to its customers but also actively contributing to the health and well-being of the planet.

Food waste is another area that plagues the entire food industry’s impact on the environment. Some companies simply toss food that is damaged, unsold, or past its best-before date. truLOCAL takes a different approach by donating food that is below our standards, whether it’s approaching the best-before date, incorrectly labelled, or has a punctured vacuum seal, to local charities to ensure that this food is not wasted. In 2023, truLOCAL donated over 1,300lbs of meat to charities such as the Veteran’s Association Food Bank in Calgary. It’s a win-win.

In today's world, where the effects of climate change are becoming increasingly apparent, it's more important than ever for businesses to prioritize sustainability. truLOCAL's commitment to environmental responsibility serves as a reminder of how companies can thrive while also making a positive difference in the world.

As Earth Day fades from our collective consciousness, let us not forget that the fight for environmental sustainability is ongoing. By supporting companies that prioritize sustainability and responsible practices, we can all play a part in creating a healthier, more sustainable future for generations to come. So let's continue to support local, embrace responsible farming practices, and strive to make every day Earth Day.
