What is
grass-fed beef?
Grass fed beef is talked about a lot, especially 100% grass fed. But what does that mean, isn't all beef 100% grass fed? Many people are surprised to hear the answer is no. In fact the majority of cattle raised for consumption spend some of their lives in pastures eating grass, but then are moved to a feedlot for grain-finishing where most of their bulking up occurs.
Why is this? In short- it's more cost effective. Cattle that are “corn-fed”, “grain-fed”, or “corn-finished” are typically fattened up on maize, soy, and other types of feed before slaughter. Because these foods are so high in starch and high in energy, it increases their size, and also gets them there at a much quicker rate. Many are fed on a feed-lot requiring a lot less land to get the same amount of beef products. All of this results in a lower quality, but more inexpensive beef. Thus the reason we see so much of it on our grocery shelves today.
While grass fed beef has become more popular in the last couple years, this trend is definitely around to stay as we pay closer attention to our nutritional needs.
