The Wilkie Pie - Steak and cheese
You can’t go wrong with this classic meat pie from our friends at South Island Pies, located in Edmonton, who combine their New Zealand heritage with amazing local ingredients from Alberta. The Wilkie is a steak and cheese pie packed full of locally sourced beef in a rich gravy and topped with creamy aged white cheddar. Wrap all that in a 5” flaky crust and you have this incredible pie which likely takes its name from Lake Wilkie in New Zealand, the country that the pie maker is from. It is hard to decide which part of this pie is the best part because the steak is so incredibly tender, the sauce is so rich and well flavoured, and the crust is simply the best crust we have ever tasted. This amazing pie is definitely one our new favourites.
COOKING TIP: No need to fly to Lake Wilkie, NZ, to try this amazing pie. Simply, preheat your oven to 375°F, remove the pie from the packaging, place it on a baking sheet, and cook for 40 minutes (or until the internal temperature reaches 165°F). Remember that the inside filling will be extremely hot and we recommend letting it cool off a bit before eating. This pie serves one person (but they will be a very happy person).
