Ground beef… with benefits

truLOCAL introduces Primal Ground Beef to Canadian customers. A healthier ground beef for those who want to kick their beef up a healthy notch.


Since we began truLOCAL in 2016, we have heard from a lot of people asking us to include a product or cut to our marketplace but there is one request that we are starting to hear a lot more recently. People are looking for a mix of high-quality grass fed and finished ground beef and nutrient-dense organ meat. Grass fed beef has tons of health benefits over regular beef, and mixing in organ meat adds valuable vitamins and nutrients (and utilizes more of the animal avoiding waste). We have been searching for a way to gain these benefits without upsetting our more conservative customers and we have finally found it. Introducing truLOCAL’s Primal Grass-Fed Lean Ground Beef.

What is it?

Primal ground beef is the same grass-fed and finished lean ground beef that you are used to with organ meat added to it during the grinding process. The difference is nearly indistinguishable but a much healthier version of your typical lean ground beef. The exact mix differs from region to region but the split between beef and organ meat ranges between 75/25 and 90/10 (BC has a ratio of 75/25, AB 90/10, and ON 80/20) and includes organs such as heart, liver, and kidney.

What are the benefits?

As you might know, we are big fans of grass-fed and finished beef so let's just start with the health benefits of that first. Compared to regular grain-finished beef, grass-fed and finished ground beef contains nearly double the amount of the beneficial fatty acid called CLA (conjugated linoleic acid) which can help prevent several diseases and conditions like obesity and diabetes, and is considered to be one of the strongest nutrients which can defend against cancer. Grass-fed beef provides up to six times more omega-3 fatty acids than grain-fed beef which results in a long list of benefits including improving eye health, fighting arthritis, alleviating some depression and anxiety concerns, improving risk factors for heart disease, and helping with hypertension (and more). Including a mix of organ meat into your diet is a great way to increase important nutrients, including vitamins A and B, protein, zinc, iron and selenium, as well as essential amino acids and antioxidants.

Primal Lean Ground Beef is perfect for anyone on specific diets (Paleo, Keto, Carnivore), those looking to get more from their favourite meals, supporters of more sustainable and ethical meat production, and fitness enthusiasts and health-conscious people.

How can it be used?

Primal ground beef can be used in every way that regular ground beef can be used. Tacos, pasta sauces, meatloaves, meatballs, burgers. All will be the cooked the same way as regular ground beef. 

Does it taste different?

We all know that liver tastes different than a steak but this primal blend is mainly ground beef so it will not taste like liver or other organs. We have specifically blended our Primal Lean Ground Beef to offer a subtle organ flavour that enhances rather than overpowers the beef. You will not even notice it in the final dish. Think of it as ground beef with benefits - the taste of ground beef with a big bump of health benefits.

Will it be gross?

No, it’s definitely not gross in any way. This is the usual question that we get from people unfamiliar with this type of meat and we want to cover so that you know that this looks exactly like ground beef. Honestly, we fear that people won’t be able to tell the difference and therefore wonder if they are eating boring regular ground beef. Your kids will never know that you are feeding them healthier versions of the foods they love.

We are still going to have our other ground beef options so don’t worry. You can still choose grain-fed, grass-fed and finished, or primal grass-fed and finished. It all depends on your priorities and preferences.
