WW - Make BBQ Season Work for You!

Summer is here and that means one thing...BBQ season! Check out our top tips for making the most of the grill this season.

The summer sun is here to stay, and that means barbeque season has officially begun! Whether you’re firing up the ‘cue at the cottage or in the backyard, it should be a time to relax, and most of all - enjoy. We’ve rounded up our top three tips to make the most of the grill this season, all while staying on track with your goals!

Choose lean, low-point mains

While “barbeque” can conjure up images of greasy burgers and behemoth steaks, there are tons of lean options that cook up fabulously on the grill. Grilled chicken breasts are incredibly versatile - they’re delicious as a standalone, paired with a tasty side, or they can be added to salads, skewers, or stir-frys. They’re also an incredible canvas for marinades, like this orange ginger option - if that doesn’t rocket chicken breasts straight to “must-grill” status, I don’t know what will. Fish is also a great choice for the grill - wild-caught salmon, or white fish like haddock are excellent options for your next family barbeque. Craving a hearty grilled steak? Top sirloin is a leaner but still tender and flavourful option - you really can’t go wrong. Don’t forget to stock on up staples so you always have something delicious waiting for you in the freezer!

Get creative with side dishes

Potatoes and corn on the cob don’t have to be the only barbecue staples in your repertoire. Fruits and veggies make for great sides - and tossing them on the grill takes them to a whole new level. Try sweet options like peaches, pineapples, bananas, or melons! You can grill them solo, add them to a summer spinach salad, or you can even stack a few on a skewer for a delicious dessert kebab. The heat from the grill amplifies the sweet flavours, while the smokiness adds a little something extra to those fruity favourites. Trying something savoury instead? Try grilled cabbage or Brussels sprouts - with a little bit of seasoning, the flavour will be out of this world. Wrapped in foil, any of your go-to veggies can go on the grill - so if you’re splurging on a steak, or saving room for an after-dinner treat, you can still fill your plate to the brim with deliciousness.

Select plan-friendly recipes

Choosing recipes that work with your personal goals is key to staying on track! Marinades like dill and garlic or lemon pepper are great options to add major flavour to your meal without using up any of your PersonalPoints™. It doesn’t get much better than that! Thaw your meat ahead of time and leave it to marinate in the fridge for up to 24 hours before you plan to grill - the more time the marinade has to soak in, the bigger the flavour will be. Or plan ahead for a tasty option like these Greek chicken burgers - light and zesty, they’re the perfect pairing to an evening out on the deck.

Bonus truLOCAL pro tip: don’t forget to empty the grease trap and scrape the grill to reduce the risk of out-of-control flames.
