Best Burger Toppings.

Needs some inspiration for the upcoming burger season? truLOCAL staff members describe their favourite burger ideas.

The options for hamburger toppings seem to be endless. From the common combinations of ketchup and mustard to unique toppings like fried egg and kimchi, everyone has their own idea of what the perfect burger toppings are. You probably already know what you prefer, and we respect that, but if you are looking to change up your burger game this season, you need to try some of the combos created by the truLOCAL team.

Mitch’s Mex-Mac Burger

We thought that we would kick this off with a burger that is just slightly outside the norm, just like its creator, Mitch. This burger is the perfect combination of breakfast, lunch, and dinner!

Ingredients: Cheesy bun, BC's truLOCAL beef burger, white cheddar macaroni and cheese, taco seasoning, truLOCAL ground beef, truLOCAL turkey bacon, fried egg, ketchup, and hot sauce.

Start by making up some white cheddar mac and cheese mixing it with some ground beef and taco seasoning (leftovers from taco night work great here). Place the mixture on a fresh cheese bun and top with a burger patty, turkey bacon, a fried egg (the drippier, the better), ketchup, and hot sauce. This creation has the perfect combination of burger and comfort food in every bite. Make sure that you are hungry, this burger is filling!

Tiara’s Halloumi Cheeseburger

Tiara takes the crown for taking a classic cheeseburger and making it into something dreamy.

Ingredients: truLOCAL beef burger, brioche bun, iceberg lettuce, tomato slice, thinly sliced red onion, grilled halloumi cheese, sautéed mushrooms, honey garlic sauce, and garlic aioli.

Tiara adds the honey garlic sauce to the beef burger while it's on the BBQ and then tops it with grilled halloumi, fresh toppings, and garlic aioli. The secret to this amazing burger is to grill the halloumi cheese on the top rack of a BBQ or in a frying pan for two minutes per side.

Irma’s Peanut Butter, Swiss, Bacon Burger

A burger that satisfies both your sweet and salty tooth. If you have never thought of putting peanut butter on a burger, you’re likely not alone - but also really missing out!

Ingredients: truLOCAL's grass-fed beef burger, swiss cheese, mushrooms, truLOCAL maple bacon, smooth peanut butter, and your bun of choice.

Irma loves this burger because it’s a combination of her two favourite burger topping combinations: mushrooms & swiss cheese, and bacon and peanut butter. When I first heard Irma say that her favourite burger topping was peanut butter and bacon, I was baffled for two reasons. First, that I never thought of that before and second, how incredibly delicious that would be. This realization that everyone likes very different toppings inspired this collection of truLOCAL’s favourite burger combos.

Courtney’s Perfectly Pear-ed Veggie Burger

Courtney’s burger (pictured at the top of the page) is one that screams sophistication and grace.

Ingredients: Veggie burger, Bartlett pear, blue cheese, caramelized onions, and smoky BBQ sauce.

Grill the veggie burger and top with the remaining ingredients. The smokiness of the onions and BBQ sauce just barely contains the mighty flavour of the blue cheese and the crisp acidity of the pear perfectly cuts through the richness.

Justin’s Jalapeño Popper Burger

Justin’s concept burger started by him imitating his favourite pub food: jalapeño poppers fresh from the deep fryer. We admit that his creation sounds amazing (and making it at home will save you the cover charge)!

Ingredients: truLOCAL beef burger, softened cream cheese, jalapeños, and deep-fried onions.

Roast the jalapeños in a 450℉ oven (or barbecue) until the skin starts to blister and char. Allow to cool, deseed, and finely chop them before mixing them with the softened cream cheese. Top the burger with deep-fried onions and the jalapeño cream cheese mixture. Any remaining jalapeño spread will be great on your morning bagel!

Trish’s Everything-but-the-Charcuterie-Board Burger

Sweet and savoury, this burger is like dinner and dessert all wrapped into one.

Ingredients: Goat cheese-stuffed beef patty made from truLOCAL ground beef, local honey, truLOCAL bacon, fig jam, arugula, and a lightly toasted brioche bun.

This one takes a bit more work but believe us that it is well worth it! First, make handmade burger patties with goat cheese inside. Then grill the burger as usual, drizzle with honey, and top with the remaining ingredients. The honey and fig jam complements the sweetness of the goat cheese, while its tanginess plays along with the juicy, savoury notes of the beef and bacon. Arugula adds further depth of flavour with its earthy qualities, and the brioche bun helps to absorb some of the juice (getting those amazing flavours into your mouth and not all over your hands!) while lending a light, eggy, bready quality to the meal.

Alen’s Breakfast Boar Burger

Alen is either so busy that he has to combine many meals into one, or a total culinary genius (or both)! His burger takes all the best parts of breakfast and combines them with a burger.

Ingredients: truLOCAL elk burger (or beef), 2 waffles, truLOCAL turkey bacon, egg cooked sunny side up, tomato, avocado, red onion, cheddar cheese, and chipotle sauce.

Alen describes this burger as a variety of flavours and textures. The fresh tomato, smoky chipotle sauce, sweet waffles, sharp cheddar, the oozy egg, and the crunch of the onion all come together to provide a dining experience that is unique, to say the least. Yeah, he is likely a visionary/culinary genius. We picture him writing out this recipe on a window with a marker, just like in that scene from the movie A Beautiful Mind.

Malavika’s Aloo Tikki Burger

Malavika presents a meatless burger inspired by one of her favourite local restaurants.

Ingredients: Crispy potato patties, tamarind-mint chutney, sriracha mayo, a pickled onion-cucumber-tomato-cilantro-lime mix, and a pretzel bun.

Malavika loves this burger because it reminds her of Indian street food and, being vegetarian, she likes the potatoes instead of meat but we think that these toppings would work well on a beef burger too. Just don’t serve the beef version to Malavika. She’s a vegetarian.

Hoda’s Spicy, Salty, Smoky Burger

Hoda’s burger sounds delicious - tangy, smoky, salty, and spicy.

Ingredients: truLOCAL beef burger, hot banana peppers, truLOCAL bacon, pickles, mustard, cheese, bacon jam, and onion rings

We think this burger screams pub night and picture it beside a basket of fries and a pint of beer. Now you know how to make it at home (fries and beer not included).

Steve’s Spicy Chophouse Burger

Steve’s sweet, spicy, and savoury burger is inspired by the apple butter that made his small town famous.

Ingredients: truLOCAL bison burger (or beef), truLOCAL pepper bacon* (or regular bacon or lamb burger because the peppered bacon is no longer available), apple butter, pepper jack cheese, and pickled jalapeños

This burger is a balance of sweet apple butter, smoky bacon, and spicy toppings. The apple butter is a nice sweet surprise but Steve is very clear that the highlight is definitely the bacon. Steve is very passionate about bacon and thinks that truLOCAL’s pepper bacon* is the best bacon in Canada (don’t believe him? Read his blog about it).

*Please note that we no longer carry this cut of bacon.
